Talking with The Lord

Psalm 139:1-4

“O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord”.

Notice in these few verses how David repeats how God knows us. Verse 2 – God knows my thoughts and my daily habits. Verse 3 – God knows my location. Verse 4 - God knows my words (spoken and unspoken). In this prayer, David is finding comfort that God truly and completely knows him, while at the same time reminding himself that we can run but we can never hide from God. In verses 7-10 David admits this; “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence…if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast”.

My grandkids love to play hide and seek with me and I love it. Hiding in the shower is one of my favorite places because it is so roomy (smile). I get a kick out of the smile on the face of the one who finds me first and I enjoy their explanation of how they knew where I was hiding. My explanation for the way God knows each of us is simply that He created each of us in His own image. There isn’t anything about us; what we think, what we say, and what we do that ever surprises God. How does that make you feel? It makes me feel comforted and convicted. Comforted in that I have confidence that God is always with me. Convicted that God knows, God sees, when I fail Him. All this “knowing” is wrapped up in the deep, abiding love of our creator and sustainer God.

Romans 8:38-39 tells us: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. There are lots of things that can separate my relationship with God, things that become priority over His will for me. This means that my conversation with God must be a daily, on-going back and forth experience; in my “sitting”, “rising”, “going”, and “lying down” (Psalm 139:1-3).

Let’s make sure we make time for a little talk with the Lord today; “Now let us have a little talk with Jesus, let us tell Him all about our troubles, He will hear our faintest cry and He will answer by and by; Now when you feel a little prayer wheel turning and you know a little fire is burning, you will find a little talk with Jesus makes it right” (“Just a little talk with Jesus”, Cleavant Derricks 1937).
